August 6, 2009 -- On August 27, 2009 at 6:30 PM, the Denler Art Gallery in St. Paul, MN will be hosting a live installment of Let's Paint TV, an instructional television show in which Los Angeles-based host John Kilduff will demonstrate how to make paintings, exercise, and prepare food--all at the same time, while responding to audience questions.
Lets Paint TV began as a public access television show in Los Angeles, California, in 2001. Over a run of hundreds of episodes, the show has also been broadcast in New York & London, while John Kilduff has also made special appearances on other television shows such as America's Got Talent and the Tyra Banks Show (painting David Hasselhoff's and Tyra Banks' portraits, respectively). Though known primarily as a television personality, John Kilduff's artwork has increasingly received serious critical attention. His smart and innovative use of contemporary media distribution technology has allowed him to craft a distinct and idiosyncratic practice that is equal arts performance art and (ironic?) expressionistic painting. It is, quite literally, "action painting."A recent MFA graduate of UCLA, Kilduff primarily aims to—sincerely—instruct and motivate his viewers to "get your creative juices flowing." In addition to the performance, several of Kilduff's paintings and watercolors will be on display in the gallery, along with a selection of videos of past episodes. The exhibit will run from the night of the performance, on Thursday, August 27, to Saturday, October 3rd.
The performance & exhibit are both free and open to the public. The opening reception will coincide with the performance and will take place August 27 from 6 to 8 PM. For the remainder of the exhibit the gallery will be open to the public Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 4:30.
